John Eliphalet Smith (1878-1963), native of Polk County, Or., was an instructor in geology at the University of North Carolina, 1912-1917. The collection is chiefly letters, 1913-1917, to Smith, while he was at the University of North Carolina, from Joseph Hyde Pratt about field surveys of mineral deposits carried out for the North Carolina Geological and Economic Survey; and a family history entitled, (85 pages). John Eliphalet Smith (1878-1963) of Polk County, Or., was an instructor in geology at the University of North Carolina, 1912-1917, and during that period also did surveys and reports for the North Carolina Geological and Economic Survey and for Carolina and Northwestern railroad. He was educated in Oregon, Kansas, Iowa, Chicago, and Missouri. He taught at Iowa State University, 1917-1937, and in his later years lived in Corvallis, Or., where he studied and wrote in the field of local history. ...
